Eight pairs of gold earrings worn by an ancient Assyrian queen have been recovered by the Iraq Museum. The earrings - along with three cuneiform tablets - were spotted by Iraqi diplomats at an auction in Washington and returned to Iraq by Interpol, Azzaman reports. It is thought that the artefacts belong to the Nimrud treasure hoard uncovered in royal tombs in Baghdad in 1988 and recovered from the city's central bank in 2003, where it had been stored since just before the start of the Gulf War sierra outdoor fireplace. It had previously been believed that the collection had escaped looting. The hoard is some 2,800 years old and includes a range of gold jewellery and objects weighing about 50 kg.Some archaeologists consider the treasure to be as significant as the discovery of the contents of Tutankhamen's tomb.Assyria was an ancient kingdom located in the north-east of modern Iraq. It fell in 612 BC to the Babylonians.
